A Thank You From AFT on "We Are One" Actions

Thank you for participating in the “We Are One” actions earlier this month. Our union brothers and sisters, our allies in the civil rights and faith communities, and countless other organizations and individuals joined in thousands of events, large and small, around the nation.

One group that has been steadfast in supporting our fight for workers’ rights is the immigrant community. Thousands of immigrant workers are union members, but far too many others still are waging their own heroic battles for the right to make a living wage.

For the last five years, the immigrant community has come together on May 1 in a growing list of cities nationwide, holding marches to demand fair treatment, respect and a voice in the workplace. These marches have been driven by the same spirit of activism that now drives all of us in our “We Are One” campaign against the attacks on working people.

As our fight for workers’ rights continues, we hope you will urge your affiliate to participate in the community events happening near you. Actions are planned in the following cities, and the list is growing daily: Boston; Chicago; Duluth, Minn.; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Madison, Wis.; Milwaukee; New York City; Portland, Ore.; Reno, Nev.; San Francisco; Seattle; St. Paul, Minn.; and Washington, D.C.

Please pass on the event information to your members and encourage them to participate. For more information on May Day events near you, check with your state labor federation or local central labor council, or visit the “We Are One” website’s map of local actions near you.

In solidarity,

Al Davidoff
AFT Chief of Staff
