AFT-Wisconsin teacher honored at White House for Teacher Appreciation Day

WISCONSIN TEACHER TO ATTEND WHITE HOUSE TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY

Madison, WI: Kathy Evert, a fourth grade teacher at Mazomanie Elementary in the Wisconsin Heights School District, is one of a group of teachers from around the country invited to the White House for President Barack Obama’s celebration of Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday, May 3.  At the event, according to the White House, President Obama will recognize the National Teacher of the Year as well as other outstanding educators from across America.

Evert, who is the co-president of the Wisconsin Heights Federation of Teachers, American Federation of Teachers (AFT) local 1917, expressed gratitude for the invitation.  “To be chosen to participate in the White House celebration of Teacher Appreciation Day is an enormous honor,” Evert said.  “I’m thankful for the opportunity to be part of a group of excellent teachers from across the country as we celebrate the National Teacher of the Year with President Obama.  And I’m looking forward to the chance to bring back lots of pictures and stories to share with my fourth graders in Mazomanie!”

Evert will attend the event as a representative of the AFT.  According to Kim Kohlhaas, a teacher from the Superior school district and president of AFT-Wisconsin, Evert was selected in recognition of her dedication to professional development and student learning.  “I’ve known Kathy for several years now,” said Kohlhaas, “and I’ve been extremely impressed by her dedication to her students and to her larger community.  In addition to her hard work in her own classroom, she is a strong supporter of newer educators in her district, working with them to develop their skills as they learn the ropes.  She is well respected by parents in her district and by her colleagues as an educator who cares about providing an exciting, safe, high-quality learning environment.  I’m proud that she’ll be representing teachers in Wisconsin and our fellow AFT-Wisconsin members at this celebration of American educators.”
